The patent for the Atmos II replaced the mercury-powered motor used for the first generation of perpetual clocks with a capsule filled with a gas that is highly sensitive to temperature changes: ethyl chloride - C2H5Cl. This new technique marked a breakthrough in the development of the famous clock that lives on irregular temperature conditions. It is still in use.
