Gem setting

The traditional type of gem-setting allows the craftsman to add a personal touch to the motif. He decides on the exact placing and the number of stones to be set, and the design of the motif, on the creation entrusted to him. He begins by drilling small holes, then drills to size. Like a sculptor with his material, he makes progressive cuts. From these cuts he draws out the grain which will grip the stones. At this stage, each stone is put in place and must be carefully adjusted to achieve a perfect fit. Lastly the hole is circular-grained; the stone can then no longer escape from its setting.
