With The Fourth Annual St. Regis International Cup at Cowdray Park Polo Club, May 21, 2011
St. Regis Hotels & Resorts hosted the fourth annual St. Regis International Cup in partnership, for the first time, with Jaeger-LeCoultre, the Official Timekeeper of Cowdray Park Polo Club celebrating 80 years of its iconic Reverso timepiece. This 28-goal polo test match – the first match in the UK International Series - was the most exciting yet. St. Regis Connoisseur Nacho Figueras and Jaeger-LeCoultre’s brand ambassador Eduardo Novillo Astrada lead the South America team into victory with 9 goals to the Audi England teams 6.5 goals. While a Frenchman (Cesar de Trey) can claim the invention of the idea of a reversible watch and the Swiss watchmakers in Le Sentier (at the then Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre) can take credit for transforming this idea into what is now a veritable icon, it is actually the British (Officers in India in the 1930s) who first expressed the interest and commissioned Cesar de Trey to create an elegant watch to endure the shocks and rough play on the polo field. Now, some 80 years on from the introduction of the first Reverso timepieces in 1931, the iconic reversible timepiece has fascinated collectors and novices alike for its understated style, versatility and complications – made in-house at the Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre. The British connection with the Reverso has remained strong throughout its history, most notably seen specially engraved, enameled and bejeweled case backs in the Heritage Gallery of the Jaeger-LeCoultre, including the coats of arms of famous schools: Eton College, Harrow College, the University of St Andrews are only some of the few to create engravings… Beautifully enamelled pieces commissioned by the British Racing Drivers Club, The Order of the Thistle, Royal Air force Cranwell College, Royal Sussex Regiment, The Life Guards (British Army), Gurkha Rifles… and the most mysterious of all, a Reverso made for King Edward VIII….
