Last June, Jaeger-LeCoultre was proud to associate itself with Sofia Mulanovich, the Peruvian World Surfing Champion, for the launch of its new Master Compressor Diving Lady collection off the Hawaiian coast. A women's surfing prodigy, Sofia Mulanovich is known for her radical and fiery surfing style that she has acquired through relentless training. This ambitious and radiant sportswoman's journey is a dream come true: she confronted her first wave at the age of 9, none other than the famous "Mancora" in Peru. At the age of 20, she took the world championship title. Talent, pleasure and emotion become one and the same when she speaks of Peru, her achievements and the fantastic waves and stunning scenery of her surfing world. Her favourite spots are in her native city of Lima, in Fiji, in Australia and in France - i.e., wherever exceptional waves are just waiting to be ridden.
In July 2007, Sofia Mulanovich was inducted into the Surfers Hall of Fame of California along with Al Merrick, Martin Potter, and Bruce Irons. "To be recognized by the Surfers Hall of Fame among the best surfers and surfing icons, is beyond a dream, beyond what I can explain in my heart." She is the youngest (male or female) and first South American to receive this recognition.
Speaking of the Master Compressor Diving Chronograph Lady she wore in Hawaii, she says "It is exactly like women's professional surfing: cool, high on performance and dynamic, in an exciting blend of style and pleasure."
Sofia Mulanovich began to make history in 2004 when she became the first South American to win the International Surfing Association (ISA) Championship title, as she competed on behalf of her country. As she continued her second year on the World Championship Tour (WCT) she won her first WCT event, the Roxy Pro Fiji and the next two consecutive events, opening the door for world title contention. Sofia Mulanovich solidified her World Title crown, at the age of 21, in November that year at the Roxy Pro in Haleiwa, Hawaii... dethroning the current six-time World Champion Layne Beachley. She is the first South American (male or female) in modern day surfing history to win a surfing World Title.
In 2005 Mulanovich was presented the prestigious Laurels Sports Award by President Toledo of Peru and her name was mounted on the outside of the National Stadium in Lima. The first five-star World Qualifying Series (WQS) was held at Asia Beach in Peru, where record-breaking crowds of 15,000 people came to watch Mulanovich surf. In December of 2006 Mulanovich rounded out her career achievements when she won the Triple Crown of Surfing in Hawaii. Mulanovich is currently ranked third on the WCT and is competing for the 2007 WCT.
Since 1963, readers of the American Surfer magazine have voted for the male and female surfers they consider the most influential and the most competitive in this sport. Mark Richards, Kelly Slater, Wendy Both and Lisa Andersen are just some of the legends who have already been honoured by the prestigious Surfer Poll. In 2007 (the 35th edition), Sofia Mulanovich has been awarded the top spot in the women's ranking for the third consecutive year. She accepted her prize and dedicated it to all the Peruvians who suffered the pain and loss of the 2007 earthquake, saying "Be strong and carry on fighting".
Sofia Mulvanovich has become an icon for people of all generations in her country, who are proud that she is the first Peruvian and South American ever to join the surfing elite. Sofia takes this support very seriously: "I give it my best every time I surf, and I know that gives hope to an entire continent."
