Polo final in Porto Cervo
A gripping Final match, a glorious celebration of power and agility
The Costa Smeralda Spring Polo Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup 2008 came to an end on May 3, 2008 in the rugged and stunning setting of Bucchi Toltu in Porto Cervo, Sardinia.
From April 26 to May 2, the Green House team together with the title sponsor Jaeger-LeCoultre team, battled their way through the qualification stages to face off in the Finals for the Spring Gold Cup 2008 title.
With many of the guests having seen both teams play several games during the week, most bets were on the Jaeger-LeCoultre team to win. However, the Green House team also showed great skill in reaching the finals, with some very tough matches along the way.
The Final match started off, as all expected, with incredible intensity and a hand injury for Simone Chiarella. In the end, Green House’s Santiago C. Marambio (5 goals) and Pablo Pieres (6 goals) played exceptionally well, and led their team to victory.
Despite Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Chiarella’s injury, the team ended the tournament in second overall position. In addition, Eduardo Menendez of team Jaeger-LeCoultre was awarded the title of “Best Player of the tournament”.
Following are the results of the tournaments, in which six of the world’s best teams with a handicap level of 15 Goals competed:
1. Green House, winner of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Spring Gold Cup 2008
2. Jaeger-LeCoultre, winner of the Audi Spring Silver Cup 2008
3. Team Cala di Volpe
4. Team Audi
5. Team Deutsche Bank PWM
6. Team Tecnomar
Jaeger-LeCoultre, while disappointed that the team didn’t take the Cup title in the end, was extremely pleased with the success of this 3rd edition of the Costa Smeralda Spring Gold Cup, which is indeed already considered by professionals to be one the most prestigious international Polo meetings of the year and has been entered in the Gotha of the great international events.
