Preserving endangered ecosystems: Insular Venice and its lagoon is the 12th site supported by Jaeger-LeCoultre.
Founded around 568, Venice gradually became one of the most prestigious cultural places in Europe. To protect its natural and cultural heritage, Insular Venice and its lagoon has been Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1987. Nature and history are inseparable in this 50 000 square kilometre lagoon.
The city covers a compact archipelago of 118 closely grouped islands connected by 160 canals.
Venice has had considerable influence in terms of architecture and monumental arts. The lagoon houses one of the world’s greatest concentrations of works of art: Torcello Cathedral, Piazza San Marco, the Palazzo Ducale, etc. This heritage is constantly under threat from the tides, especially in autumn and early spring. This phenomenon has considerably worsened in the past few decades as a consequence of global warming. Lastly, silting is an additional threat for this site that has developed an exceptional style of urbanism adapted to the location’s special requirements.

Through its global “Making Time More Beautiful” project, Jaeger-LeCoultre is committed to supporting various local and international causes linked to sustainable development. With this in mind, Jaeger-LeCoultre has entered into a three-year partnership with the UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre and with the International Herald Tribune in order to provide support for various endangered sites.
The first year of the partnership has seen the implementation of some ambitious projects: eight sites have already been supported and public awareness has been heightened with regard to the threats facing these regions.
This first year also witnessed the birth of the Master Compressor Extreme W-Alarm "Tides of Time" watch, of which the “Number 1” prototype was auctioned for the sum of £13,540. All proceeds from this sale were donated to the Tubbataha Marine Park, which has been inscribed on the World Heritage List since 1993. This donation served to renew the site’s radar system which monitors the comings and goings of ships in the waters of the park.
