The Heritage of Jaeger-LeCoultre Chronographs

Jaeger-LeCoultre, often referred to as the “Watchmaker of Watchmakers”, has forged its reputation in the Vallée de Joux, the cradle of Swiss Haute Horlogerie, since 1833. The Manufacture has developed hundreds of inventions and over a thousand unique calibres. JLC’s commitment to the chronograph goes back a long way: as early as 1866, LeCoultre & Cie. was mass-producing calibres featuring minor complications, and by 1891, it was already combining chronograph and minute repeater complications. By 1900, the Manufacture had produced 128 chronograph calibres. More recently, in 1996, Jaeger-LeCoultre launched its first mechanical wristwatch chronograph, the Reverso Chronograph Rétrograde (Cal. 829), followed by the Duometre Chronographe in 2007, featuring its innovative Dual-Wing concept.

Chronograph vs. Chronometer: A Crucial Distinction

It is important to distinguish between a chronograph and a chronometer. A chronograph is a watch with an additional function that allows the wearer to measure short intervals of time, acting as a “chronometer” in the common sense of the term. This is a watchmaking complication.

In contrast, a chronometer is a watch whose movement precision has been certified as accurate by an official, independent body, such as the COSC, following a series of rigorous tests. In other words, a watch can be a chronograph (with a stopwatch function) and can also be certified as a chronometer (for its high levels of precision).

The Precision at the Heart of Our In-House Movements

Our luxury chronographs are rooted in a tradition of innovation and a relentless pursuit of perfection. Each Jaeger-LeCoultre chronograph watch is a celebration of timekeeping, with sophisticated in-house movements, often endowed with a column-wheel chronograph mechanism and vertical clutch for smooth and precise operation. These technical achievements ensure a generous power reserve and rock-solid reliability.
