The history of the tourbillon watch
When a mechanical watch is held in a fixed position, whether flat or upright, an unavoidable phenomenon disrupts its operation: gravity. This exerts pressure on the movement’s sensitive components, such as the regulating organ (composed of the balance wheel and the balance spring) or the escapement, which leads to a loss of precision.
However, an ingenious mechanism allows these effects to be compensated: the tourbillon. In a tourbillon watch, the regulating organ and escapement are integrated into a rotating cage, thus eliminating this gravitational influence. Defying the laws of nature, the balance oscillates at 360°, offering unprecedented precision. Initially reserved for pocket watches, the tourbillon was gradually adopted for wristwatches, becoming an emblem of Swiss watchmaking craftsmanship. A symbol of precision and sophistication, it is one of the most delicate complications to create.
