CRAFTSMANSHIP

80 HOURS OF MINIATURE PAINTING

The first challenge was to miniaturise the original ink-and-wash paintings, on a surface of approximately 2 cm2. Moreover, the reproductions had to recreate the sense of dynamic movement projected through the artist’s bold brushstrokes, as well as the restrained detailing that so eloquently captures the spirit of the horses.

GUILLOCHÉ ENAMELLED DIAL

The watch dial is decorated with a barley-seed guilloché pattern, comprising 50 intricate precise lines. This intricate design lies beneath a translucent grand feu enamel that echoes the soft blue background in the painting. Named Distant Mountain Blue, it evokes the misty silhouette of distant mountains in traditional Chinese landscape paintings – serene, profound and timeless.

ART STORY

XU BEIHONG, FATHER OF MODERN CHINESE ART

Xu Beihong, the most influential Chinese artist in 20th-century China is widely acknowledged as the pioneer of modern Chinese painting. After studying in Europe, he advocated for reforming Chinese art by incorporating European techniques and real-life observation, moving away from traditional imitation. Best known for his ink-and-wash paintings of horses, Xu Beihong's skillful brushwork allowed him to create dynamic paintings with profound symbolism.

TWO HORSES

The scene is from the 1942 masterpiece, Running Together (Six Horses), which pays homage to the ‘Six Steeds of Zhao Mausoleum’, a set of 7th-century stone reliefs that commemorate the warhorses of the Tang dynasty Emperor, Taizong. Depicting two horses at full gallop: one black, one white, this dramatic image projects power and energy, as well as suggesting a strong affinity between the two horses.

CALIBRE

A RECTANGULAR HEART

The manually wound calibre 822 that drives the Reverso Tribute Enamel Xu Beihong watch is the epitome of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s philosophy. Entirely designed, produced and assembled in-house, calibre 822 is an uncommon rectangular movement allowing it to fit in the Reverso watch case.

THE BIRTH OF AN ICON

In 1931, Jaeger-LeCoultre launched a watch that was destined to become a classic of 20th-century design: the Reverso. As an object that so deftly synthesised form and function, it has become one of the most recognisable watches of all time, looking as fresh and modern today as when it first appeared.

While its blank metal flip side had begun as a purely functional solution to avoid damage to the dial, it was an ideal surface for personalisation with monograms, emblems or personal messages using lacquer, engraving, enamel or gemstones. The Jaeger-LeCoultre museum showcases exceptional examples of this craftsmanship, including the 1936 Reverso ‘Indian Beauty’.
